A Sujatha novel in the famed "Ganesh- Vasanth" series. The novel's plot is a hackneyed Agatha Christie template and the whodunit part is underwhelming. What keeps the novel going are the Vasanth witticisms. The Srilankan Eelam issue is just a topical one to add spice to the story as the novel was serialized in 1984. Overall, a below-par novel which still sells because of the author's reputation.

What makes this particular memoir stand out is that the author does not restrict itself to on-field action - it captures the routines before matches, the joyous banter in team lunches, the superstitions which supposedly help the team win etc. Imran Khan's public persona is available for consumption in various other tomes but nothing can match the parent Khan in the pages of this book who is trying to make his kids sleep before making small talk with guests who have come for dinner.

To decide on a structure for a book covering 150 years itself is a hairsplitting exercise but Wigmore aces the three S's beautifully : structure, statistics and style. The short biographical sketches thrown in inside every chapter are a delight. While obituaries have always been written for test cricket, Wigmore writes a passionate love letter of nearly 600 pages which makes us remember why we fell in love with the format in the first place and underlines why those obituaries are perennially immature.
