The tome is a labour of love by two passionate election enthusiasts. The authors combine anecdotes with number-crunching to provide an analytical history of all Indian elections since 1947. Ideas like "Uniform swing"and  "Index of opposition unity" show how psephology is no crystal-ball gazing but science grounded in statistics. The authors wax eloquent about different types of opinion polls (phone,internet,whatnot) but do not answer the crucial question : "Why opinion polls? What is the point of it all?". A book that secures a landslide win with zero propaganda and all passion.

  Name : Indian Summers Author : John Wright     Year of Publication : 2006     Genre : Non - Fiction, Cricket     Rating : ** 1/2  ( Two and a half stars out of 5) Considering the author coached the Indian cricket team during it's most transformative phase, the expectations from the book are high. The sense of humour is a particular highlight but otherwise, John Wright's bemused fascination with India and it's ways make for merely familiar reading. A separate chapter on icons like Ganguly, Sachin and Dravid was warranted but Wright gets content with concise descriptions on clashes and discussions. John Wright's tenure means much more to Indian fans than what is described in the book but at best, the book remains an outsider's account - engaging but aloof.

Name : The Saffron Storm Author : Saba Naqvi     Year of Publication : 2024     Genre : Non - Fiction, Politics     Rating : *** ( Three stars out of 5) The author is a journalist and a fellow-traveller who has chronicled the rise and fall (and rise) of BJP over the past 3 decades. That the author is a Muslim adds spice. The author steers clear of ideological judgements and opinionated writing. Her forte is reportage and she clearly sticks to that. The best portions cover the day-to-day functioning of the first ever non-Congress coalition government to have completed a full term. The most interesting anecdote relates to Vajpayee's strategy on handling USA's request to mobilise Indian troops for it's operations in Iraq.  A good read to compare and contrast the times of Vajpayee and Modi.

What makes this particular memoir stand out is that the author does not restrict itself to on-field action - it captures the routines before matches, the joyous banter in team lunches, the superstitions which supposedly help the team win etc. Imran Khan's public persona is available for consumption in various other tomes but nothing can match the parent Khan in the pages of this book who is trying to make his kids sleep before making small talk with guests who have come for dinner.
